August 26th to 29th fishing report

Denise with a nice 2 lb 10 oz bass.

Just an average black lake bass.

It was a nice four day weekend at the lake.  But Sunday was rainy and windy with Hurricane Irene remnants keeping us inside for the day.  We did manage to catch 64 bass Friday, Saturday and Monday.  Best for the week was a 3 lb 7 oz largemouth near U. D. bay mouth.  Unfortunatley the picture got erased from the camera.  Some interesting incidental catches were a 4 lb Bow Fin (dog fish) in M.P. Bay.  And a HUGE Carp.  I played it for about 10 minutes before I was able to get it to the boat.  I estimated the weight around 35 pounds and length around 32 inches.  I couldn't believe my  12 pound test line didn't break.  I also was using a small 1/0 hook.  There is no picture of this huge carp because Denise decided to stay back at the camp with Bella.  They is no way it would have fit in the livewell.  It sure was fun to catch though.  We are only three weeks away from the Dash for Cash tournament.  I'm really starting to get excited about it.  It's time to spend the next two weekends looking for hot spots.    The big lunker is still out there.  Until next time folks...

August 20th & 21st fishing report

3 lb 12 oz Smallmouth Bass August 20th, 2011
A short rainy weekend is in the books.  Caugth 9 bass and 1 pike on Saturday.  The day started beautiful and sunny.  Landed a real nice 3 lb 12 oz smallmouth bass at RPB.  It put on a nice air show with a couple good jumps.  I had a nice hookset with a jungle jig loc and creature bait.  No way that baby was getting off.  After about 30 seconds of fun, I figure I better get it in with the net.  It's my personal best record for a smallmouth.  The water level was up another inch or two and the fish bite is still slow.  Fished four hours and then did some painting.  It got overcast around 4pm and rained a little in the evening.  Sunday was a wash out with lots of rain.  No fishing!  Boo hoo hoo.  I decided to raise the docks five inches before going home.  I'm sure the water is going to rise more the next few days.  I also installed a outdoor tv antenna with remote control.  Now we get about 10 channels instead of just two snowy ones.  A couple are even digital.  Woo Hoo!  Next week I hope to report on a three day fishing weekend.  These two day weekends are just too short.  Unfortunatly, I did not find the elusive 5 pound lunker this weekend.  It's still out there!  Until next time folks...

August 6th to 14th fishing report

Denise with Bella and Billy Bass.  Could she be any happier?
4 lb 3 oz Large, August 8th.  This is the current lunker or the year.
First Calico Bass of the year.   a.ka.- "Crappie".  13 inches. Released for another day.
Howdy folks!  Here is the fishing report for August 6th through the 14th.  It was another great week, like they all are.  Although we had one really rainy day with 3 1/4 inches in the rain guage, we had a lot of sun during the week.  That one rainy day caused the lake level to gradually rise over one foot by Friday, four days later.  It is really amazing how the water level can change so quickly with the weather.  The bass bite is really changing to with the water rise.  We had some bad days where the action was really slow.  But we had good days too.  Total catch for the week was 94 bass.  Two days we didn't fish at all.  Best bass of the week (and year to date) was 4 lb 3 oz on Monday the 8th.  This one was caught near S. Bigge Island and E. of U.D.B.  The next 2 to 3 days were slow.  We caught a bunch of dinks and  fair amount of 1 to 2 pounders.  I managed to catch a fluke black Calico Bass, 13".  It was nice.  A few years ago Denise caught a nice strawberry Calico.  The lake is now peaking with the annual algae bloom and is green tinted, like pea soup.  But the bloom doesn't seem as heavy as last year.  The weeds have thinned out somewhat with the water rise, although there are still some thick areas deep in bays.  This is the last full week fishing report for the year.  The next reports will now be weekend results for the next six weeks.  We are still searching for the holy grail 5 pounder.  Maybe it will be next week?  That's a rap folks!  Until next time...

July 23rd to 31st fishing report

4 lb 1 oz Largemouth

Andrew and Jessica learning the ropes at Black Lake.  (and catching on quick!)

174 bass for the week!  Good fishing week.  Broke the four pound barrier with a 4 lb 1 oz largemouth.  Caught it in "The Cut" near, what we call "Naked Man Point". (named by my brother for an ugly sight he witnessed years ago).  Denise landed two nice, solid 3 pounders.  For the week we had decent weather,  a couple days of rain, but that didn't stop us from fishing each day.  On the 24th I had on a big fish!  I was thinking this was the big lunker bass I've been waiting for.  It kept making hard runs and had my heart pumping.  I played it for awhile and was finally able to get it near the boat to rear it's head.  I was expecting to see a large pike or bass, but it had wiskers.  Damn channel Catfish!  Doh!  It weighed around 7 lbs.  Oh well.  It was exciting anyway.  Andrew and Jessica came up for a few days and got some fishing in with us.  We had a great time.  When we weren't fishing, we played Yahtzee, watched movies and Curb your Enthusiasm.  The kids went on to Alex Bay to round out their vacation.  Until next time folks...

July 2nd to 10th fishing report

Denise with bass.

3 lb 6 oz Bass

Another week of fishing is in the books.  105 bass for the week  Still not fishing as much as normal, but not a bad take considering time spent on the lake.  3 lb 6 oz was best for the week.  Weather was great most of the week.  Water level normal.  Weeds are still on the sparse side, but will definately increase as we get deeper into the summer.  We have a couple more week long fishing trips planned for this year.  It would be nice if we can catch some bigger bass.  Still hoping to land a 5 pounder.  It's been a long time!  But we are having a blast!  If were not catching fish, we're just relaxing enjoying our time with each other at Black Lake.  Until next time...
